The WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury will get a purse split of 80/20 against Dillian Whyte for his mandatory fight as the World Boxing Council set the bid split on Thursday. If both fighters fail to negotiate on a deal for the match, the purse bid will be held on January 11th.
Though Whyte asked for 45% for the fight based on the maximum allowed number for an interim champion for facing a champion, WBC accepted the request made by Team Fury based on his massive purses in his last three fights.
The ratio of this purse split is not much surprising. Tyson Fury’s last three fights against Deontay Wilder (two times) and Otto Wallin hold much larger purses than Whyte’s last three fights.
A few days back, Fury’s promoter Bob Arum reached out to Whyte with an offer of a $5.5 million purse for the fight with a 75/25 split that his team rejected. Now Whyte is stuck to an 80/20 split.
“They wanted $10 million,” Bob Arum Claims.
Whyte Team has rejected Bob Arum’s offer, hoping that WBC would set the split around 55/45, but WBC has not accepted their stance.
Arum has not made any statement on WBC’s 80/20 split ruling. He surely needs to discuss the matter with Fury and Frank Warren for making the decisions whether they agree to negotiate with Whyte’s management or want to vacate the WBC title.
In case Fury decides to vacate his WBC belt, he will fight with Andy Ruiz Jr. or Robert Helenius in March in the UK or the United States to defend his Ring Magazine heavyweight title.
According to the reports, the negotiations have already begun among the Ruiz management and Fury’s promoter on this matter. If the fight between the two is settled, it would be PPV-worthy in the USA.
Now, it seems that it would be decided on the purse bid on January 11th. However, if Whyte agrees on the 80/20 split, he will still make a lot of money.
